Silver British Shorthair Kittens

Silver is the jewellery of the breed. Our queen, Rochel, is a black silver chinchilla imported from Canada, and her colour is the one that stops visitors mid-sentence: a coat of near-white silver with the faintest dark tipping across the back, so the cat shimmers when it moves. In chinchilla expression the tipping is confined to the last fraction of each hair; in shaded silvers it reaches a little deeper and reads as a soft veil.

The colour is built on the inhibitor gene, which strips warm pigment from the base of the hair and leaves a bright, cool silver ground. What makes a fine silver is not the gene itself but the clarity around it: an even, unmarked ground, crisp tipping, and the breed's famous “eyeliner”, the dark rims that frame sea-green eyes and make them look hand-drawn. Those eyes are silver's signature; no other colour in the breed carries them quite the same way.

Silvers photograph beautifully and live even better. The pale coat shows the plush density of the breed at its most dramatic, and despite appearances it asks no special care: the same weekly comb, the same good food. The tipping matures over the first year, and a kitten that looks almost white at eight weeks develops its full sparkle as it grows.
